IG’s Share Dealing Deal Ticket // Under construction

⛔️PAGE UNDER CONSTRUCTION⛔️

Introduction

The deal ticket is one of the most critical parts of any trading platform - it’s the moment where intention becomes action. At IG, the share dealing deal ticket had remained largely functional but outdated compared to competitors. Traders described it as unclear, unintuitive, and missing key features, leading many to prefer platforms like Trading 212, eToro, or Interactive Brokers for everyday investing.

In addition, business strategy was evolving: IG wanted to expand its appeal to retail investors by offering fractional share trading. This meant the deal ticket needed to support not just whole shares, but also fractional quantities, something the legacy design could not handle.

The project’s goal was therefore twofold:

  1. Fix usability pain points that made the ticket confusing and risky.

  2. Enable new business opportunities, such as fractional shares, while aligning with competitor standards.

The redesign was approached through the Double Diamond process - discovering user pain points, defining the core problems, developing solutions, and delivering a streamlined, competitive experience.

Discover

User Pain Points

  • Risk management hidden – Stop-loss and take-profit options exist but are buried under “Order Level,” making them easy to miss.

  • Confusing hierarchy – Key actions (Buy/Sell, Size, Order Type) are visually equal, with no clear order of operations.

  • Execution toggle unclear – “At Quote vs On Exchange” is not explained, creating uncertainty.

  • No cost transparency – Fees, stamp duty, FX impact are invisible until after order placement.

  • No portfolio impact preview – Users can’t see cash left, break-even, or % allocation.

  • Sizing friction – Only +/- controls; no slider, no % of balance shortcuts.

  • No personalisation – Defaults reset every time; doesn’t remember user preferences.

  • Lack of inline education – No tooltips for terms like “Limit – Day.”

Business Needs

  • Fractional Shares – Legacy system only supported whole shares, blocking smaller retail investors. Competitors already allowed buying “£10 worth of Apple,” not just 1 share.

  • Pennies & precision – Users couldn’t enter fractional pricing or penny-based sizing, limiting accessibility for low-capital clients.

  • Competitive parity – Trading 212, eToro, and Robinhood were already winning retail mindshare with simplified, fractional-first tickets.

Define

Core Problems

  1. Hidden & fragmented risk tools = traders miss key protections.

  2. Unclear workflow = harder for beginners, risk of mistakes.

  3. No cost/impact preview = users lack confidence.

  4. No fractional support = platform excludes smaller investors.

  5. No charts preview = hard to understand market price

Design Goals

  • Make risk management visible & easy.

  • Restructure into a clear, step-by-step flow.

  • Provide full transparency on cost & portfolio impact.

  • Support fractional shares and penny pricing.

  • Add personalisation + inline education for both new and advanced traders.
